I know, the last thing this crazy sports landscape needs is another loud-mouthed, opinionated blogger with his own intentions and motives. It’s a thankless and often-times penny-less obsession. Mired in near-anonymity in a vast world of posts, RSS feeds, and tweets. Immediately, the question of “why then?” comes to one’s mind, and the answer, at least from this writer’s pen is this: I love to write, love to reach out to a world with similar passions, and, quite frankly, there’s nothing quite like the world of Club Football.
My name is Matty Jollie, I’m an American musician, originally from the New England town of Providence, Rhode Island. I’ve followed football (or ‘soccer’ as we Yanks call it) since I first laid eyes on the beautiful game when its grandest competition came to my home country: The 1994 FIFA World Cup. Several matches were played in Foxboro, Massachusetts, a mere 35-minute drive from my front door. Many of the supporters from these foreign lands were staying in Providence, and some of my most vivid memories of that tournament were all the colors, the sounds, and of course, the people. I fell in love with the game, and more importantly, the culture. I immediately jumped aboard the bandwagon when the United States created its own league a year later (A New England Revolution die-hard since inception) and began catching the random European matches that were televised on my local cable channels.
My love-affair with Arsenal is relatively newly-founded, as it began only in 2001. My television cable company would offer a Premier League “Match of the Week” for $15, and in the fall of the 2001/02 campaign, I splurged on an Arsenal vs. Manchester United broadcast. Thierry Henry had a brace, Arsenal were magnificent in victory, and I now had a Premiership team to follow. The following decade has been full of silverware, an Invincible team, and nothing but memories. Now, as I continue my writing career (I am also a co-contributor on a Revolution blog: revs.amercan-soccer-news.com) I look to the much bigger, and more colorful world of European Club Football.
You can expect a professional, opinionated approach within this blog. Match reports, previews, opinion pieces, all will make appearances on Fire The Cannons. The main purpose of this blog is to connect with other fans (Gunners and others) throughout the world. I want this blog to create friendships, inspire debate, and hopefully, entertain. Thanks so much for taking the time, and Come on You Gunners!
